Day 76: “The Gravedigger’s Song” by Mark Lanegan Band. This is the first track off the absolutely stunning Blues Funeral. Lanegan’s roots are in the grunge scene, and that shows in the raw edge of most of his songs. The album as a whole—and this song in particular—are reminiscent of Nick Cave, particularly his work around Abbatoir Blues / Lyre of Orpheus. Like Cave, Lanegan’s strength is in his strong, quirky imagery:
With piranha teeth
I’ve been dreaming of you
And the taste of your love so sweet
Honest it’s true.
