Mass Effect 3 Demo Thoughts

Going to throw this up under a cut so anyone who doesn’t want to be spoiled won’t be. Sometimes the cut takes a second to work for me, so if you don’t see it refresh and it should be there.

Alright, moving on.

  • Where are all the dialogue choices? Even with the menu set to full dialogue, Shepard’s doing way too much talking without my input. This better just be a feature in the demo, with full functionality returning in the main game, but it makes me nervous. Plus, when we do get the chance to pick what Shepard says, there are only two options. Where’s the neutral choices? The investigate options? Again, it might be a demo thing, but I’m worried because the DA2 demo had full dialogue.
  • Cluster Grenade is my new favorite power. It’s like bowling for biotics.
  • What an amazing opening. Seriously. Even predicting what was going to happen to those shuttles, actually seeing it made a big impression. Children are usually immortal in most media, but here we see an exception to that rule and damn if it doesn’t tug on the ol’ heartstrings.
  • WREX!!!!!
  • Not sure if I’m crazy about the leveling system. Of course, I’m still yearning for the days when Charm and Intimidate had their own skill trees instead of relying on your paragon and renegade meters.
  • Anderson is awesome as always. The look Kaidan gives Shepard continues to make me yearn for the possibility of him being an option for m!Shep.
  • Fuck yeah female Krogans! It’s about time we saw some other female aliens besides the asari and quarians who basically conform to human standards of beauty (at least in silhouette as far as the quarians go). Plus, her handling of Wrex’s gun (hehe) was awesome. I like her already.
  • The combat reminds me very much of ME2. Aside from the one new ability for adepts, I didn’t see any major changes. Which is fine. If it’s not broke, yadda-yadda-yadda

All in all, I’m mostly impressed. The lack of dialogue choice concerns me most. If this is how the full game is going to be, then I’m going to be fucking pissed. But so far I’m hoping it’s a feature of the demo. If we get full dialogue choices in the main game, then this could be shaping up to be the best entry in the series.
