CONTEXT MEANS NOTHING

Oh joy, this same sentiment again. It seems to keep coming up, doesn’t it?
No, confessor, they’re not the same. You can hate Anders for his actions if you want, but this comparison is not valid. Why? Because Meredith is in the position of the oppressor and Anders is the oppressed. The templars are the authority in Kirkwall. Everyone from the nobility to people on the streets will tell you this. Grand Cleric Elthina is supposed to be Meredith’s superior, but she repeatedly refuses to acknowledge that authority and allows the templars to reign unchecked.
What happens? Well, you have Alrick issuing the Rite of Tranquility on any mage he wants to rape. You have random beatings and killings to keep the mages in line. Then you have Karras mentioning how Meredith sent for the Right of Annulment (i.e. permission to kill everyone in that tower, including innocent children). Meredith and the templars’ actions are extreme. Yes, Anders is an extremist, too. The difference, though, is that Meredith’s actions are all intended to reinforce an oppressive, abusive power structure. Anders’ actions are intended to liberate those who are being tortured and killed by said power structure.
